Helping Players

"Career-Ending Injury" "Post-Sport Transition" "Retirement"

There comes a time in every athlete's career where they will engage in sport for the last time. The crowds will leave, the lights will fade, and they will take one last look at the court, field or rink where they spent most of their lives. What comes next?

Some athletes are mentally prepared for this transition. They distinctly decide to engage in their last season, their last competition. Others suffer season or career-ending injuries, an unexpected end to a career with no mental or physical preparation. And yet others work for years after being dropped from their team to try to make another, with no offers coming their way and no control over the transition they are pushed into.

This identity transition, role transition and change in routine can be very disrupting for athletes and there is little support in place to help make this transition successful. At Beyond the League, our goal is to help athletes prepare for, and adjust to, the changes that come following sport. We provided supportive, collaborative coaching tailored to each athlete's individual story. At Beyond the League, our goal is to help athletes prepare for, and adjust to, the changes that come following sport. We help our clients thrive in their lives "beyond the league".

BUILD THE TEAM YOU NEED:

Individuals

Injury and retirement from sport can bring about dramatic changes in an athlete's lifestyle. There are changes in social support, daily routines, and purpose in activity. An "athlete" must explore new identities and new occupations. "Productivity" and "accomplishment" now take on a whole new look.

This transition can be challenging both mentally and physically for athletes. Beyond the League offers individual coaching sessions virtually or in person (in CA) for collegiate and professional athletes. If you are preparing for this transition, currently going through this transition, or feel you did not get the support you needed when you did go through this transition, we are here to help!

Consulting

We offer consulting and in-service education for sports organizations, parents, coaches or groups of athletes who would like to learn about how to prepare for retirement transition.

Each group will include tailored education, strategies, and support for the population. Our coach develops content in collaboration with group coordinators to provide the best evidence-based resources.

Coach Madison Harris

Coach Madison retired from a 15 year sports career and had a challenging time adjusting to the lack of structure, social support, and outlet for exercise that had previously accompanied her athletic identity. As she worked towards her doctorate in occupational therapy at the University of Southern California, she realized that she wanted to use the foundations of this discipline to help "coach" athletes into retirement. She recognizes the challenges that accompany this transition, and acknowledges the impact that the reason for transition can make an impact in an athletes overall acceptance and engagement in change. Her passion is to help equip athletes to prepare for and successfully engage in finding new roles/identities, careers, hobbies, daily routines, and daily purpose. After leaving your organization, you should not have to go through these changes alone. She is here to help!

Coach DIANA MELLIN

Diana is a graduate student finishing up her doctorate in occupational therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in San Marcos, CA. She is currently working on her capstone project which focuses on the mental health impacts of athletic retirement. She was inspired to pursue this topic from her own personal experiences with athletic retirement. After being cut from her high school soccer team and then suffering a concussion that cut her last season of club soccer short, she had a difficult time adjusting to this “new life” without sport. Throughout her research findings, she realized that she wasn’t the only former athlete struggling to adjust during this transitional period. Her goal is to continue to advocate for proper services for this population and to provide the tools to engage in new roles, routines, and meaningful activities after sport.
